The Catlin Family Rules

  1. If you do dumb things, you get dumb results.
  2. Even smart people can do dumb things.
  3. It's not what's important what happens, what's important is who gets the blame.
3a. Find someone else to blame, someone who's not present.
3b. Use "It's not my fault" only as a last resort.
  4. Life is one long series of negotiations.
  5. Not very many marriages fail because a partner says: "You're right and I'm wrong." or "I'm sorry." out of love.
  6. Most of our lives are spent stumbling around from crisis to crisis.
  7. Never say "All right." Say "OK" instead, because everything is never all right.
  8. When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. - Mark Twain
  9. Watch out for the "Didjas" They sometimes lead to the "Why didjas?" then to the "Why didn'tjas" and things go downhill from there.
  10. There are practical ways of developing humility, by admitting our weaknesses, by being open to correction, by being patient with other's weaknesses, and by pointing the spotlight on others. - Rick Warren
  11. To love is to will the good of the other. (St. Thomas Aquinas - Summa Theologica II-II, q. 26, art. 6). If you want to know how you're doing check your forgiveness (Matthew 18:21-22).
  12. Parents cannot be responsible for their children's failures (or their successes). They can only be responsible for good parenting. All you can do, and all you can be is all you can be.
  13. True love is unconditional, and so is forgiveness.
